Triton Digital’s Streaming Metrics monthly ranker of measured streaming entities is out for January streaming, and shows iHeartRadio in its newly established leading position, but with a dip over the past two months. Global recorded music revenues $23B in 2020; majors underperform; “unstoppable rise” of indies (MIDiA Research)

Total revenues for recorded music were $23.1-billion according to MIDiA Research. Indie labels and artists outperformed in the market, as major labels underperformed. First podcast bias chart emerges from Ad Fontes Media & Media Roundtable

Yesterday we reported on the creation of the Media Roundtable, a new podcast industry watchdog group started by Oxford Road CEO Dan Granger. Part of its mission is to collaborate with Ad Fontes Media on a podcast bias chart that graphically positions shows in a matrix of left/right bias, and factual/fabricated content. Most podcast rankers illuminate the concentration and stability of success — in other words, they don’t change much. Triton Digital’s every-four-weeks list of ranked 100 shows provides more oxygen, enabling rising shows to breathe in the exposure. In the latest, eight new shows appear, five of them from Kast Media. Media Roundtable founded to monitor and rank podcasts according to most and least bias

A new podcast industry watchdog group has been started by Oxford Road CEO Dan Granger. Called the Media Roundtable, the mission is to mobilize marketers to support truth and civility in journalism. Podcasting is part of that overall directive, and the organization will create a podcast ranker based on most-to-least biased. Al Fontes Media, creator of a well known Media Bias Chart, is involved.

UK’s Global seeks to buy 49.99% of iHeartMedia

UK-based radio and technology behemoth Global is attempting to acquire 49.9% of iHeartMedia, the largest commercial radio group in the U.S. Doing so would require exemption from U.S. government rules that regulate foreign ownership of U.S. broadcasting companies. Global is seeking that exemption now, and in doing so seems to be revealing a potential misunderstanding between the two companies. There are precedents in which the FCC has granted exemptions, but not of this scale. Continue Reading

Pandemic vaults eMarketer digital audio forecast in UK to higher levels

“Digital audio has undoubtedly benefited from the UK lockdowns,” according to eMarketer, which has revised its projection for digital audio listening in the UK. The research company now says that digital listening will grow beyond its pre-pandemic forecast, which predicts percentage-of-population metrics through 2024. Two types of listening are documented in this forecast.
