Sonos’ partnership with Spotify is getting a new layer. The companies have launched the public beta for controlling music on the wireless speakers directly from the Spotify app. With this beta, anyone on the same wifi network as the Sonos speaker can take control of the music choices. The test period is for Android, Windows, and macOS; Sonos said iOS will have access once the Spotify integration rolls out to the other platforms.
Sonos announced a pivot earlier this year into not just wireless speakers, but into exploring the addition of voice controls. In addition to its many music streaming partnerships, Sonos entered a deal with Amazon in August. The Echo product can be used to control a Sonos speaker in a house that has both. However, it will be interesting to see if Sonos tries to add its own voice control system (or directly applies the Amazon system) to any of its boutique speakers.
