We’ve seen a lot of lead-up to this moment over the past month, but today it’s official: Pandora has completed its acquisition of Rdio. The online radio company now owns the technology and intellectual property of the now-defunct streaming service. Pandora is also bringing over about 100 former employees, who will take on roles in product, engineering, and content licensing.
Rdio closed down yesterday in wake of the company’s bankruptcy filing and subsequent acquisition by Pandora. With the addition of those assets, Pandora’s leaders have said that they plan to create a new interactive listening service to complement the existing lean-back radio offering. “This move will accelerate Pandora’s plan to substantially broaden its subscription business and roll out a multi‐tier product offering by late 2016,” the company said in its press release announcing the close of its purchase.
