Despite a near-constant stream of bad press, the beleaguered Tidal streams on. The music platform announced that it has signed on its 1 millionth subscriber and is hosting a charity concert in celebration. The event – Tidal X: 1020 Amplified by HTC – is scheduled for the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Oct. 20. The bill includes head honcho Jay-Z, along with Beyonce, Prince, Usher, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj. The concert will also be streamed live on Tidal’s website, and on the site of sponsor HTC.
The company is positioning this as the first in an event series that will see all ticket proceeds benefiting nonprofit groups. In this case, the New World Foundation will receive that money. This type of concert may be the sort of angle that can help Tidal improve its image, both by promoting the philanthropic angle and by giving more perks to its members; subscribers got a first crack at the now-sold-old tickets. Many experts are already projecting Tidal’s demise, but building a strong community of impassioned fans is one way the platform could survive in the crowded streaming field.
