Spotify is giving its potential subscribers a longer time to try out its paid service. The platform announced in a blog post that it is extending the free trial period for Spotify Premium to 90 days. The change takes effect August 22 and the longer trial is available to users who have not already tried the subscription option. Both individual and student plans are covered.
The move is part of a continued back-and-forth between Spotify and Apple Music, two services fighting for dominance in paid streaming. Apple Music offers a 90-day trial period. A longer test phase makes sense for Apple Music where there is no freemium option, so three months lets people get the full experience. Spotify has long argued that its ad-supported tier can help convert listeners to paying subscribers, so the extended trial may be driven more by a need to match Apple’s offering.
