Spotify extends AI playlisting with, well, “AI Playlist”

Whether or not because of recent staff layoffs, Spotify is leaning less on human-powered playlist creation, and more on AI. Six weeks ago the company released “DJ,” a voiced AI bot and personalized content selector. Then came “daylist,” a single playlist which morphs throughout the day based on presumed moods.

Moving on from those fully independent AI selectors, Spotify now rolls out “AI Playlist,” a playlist creative algorithm which takes descriptive prompts from the listener to build unique playlists. The idea is to free the user from needing to understand genres or a broad spectrum of artists. Acting on cues like “Play relaxing music to tide me over during allergy season” or “a playlist that makes me feel like the main character” (Spotify’s examples), the app will combine AI smarts with its existing personalization tech to deliver what it calls “that perfect musical mix.”

RAIN News cannot test the feature without moving to UK or Australia (tempting, but no) — the rollout starts with those territories. Spotify provides a video (below) which conveys the gist:

AI Playlist is for Premium subscribers only, and is starting out mobile-only across Android and iOS.
