SoundCloud and SCA create SoundCloud Radio on DAB+

Crowdsource listening platform Soundcloud and Australian media company Southern Cross Austerio (SCA) are announcing a new venture: SoundCloud Radio, to be launched via DAB+ and streaming.

The station will launch August 24.

The mission is described like this: “SoundCloud Radio is the first and only station at SCA dedicated purely to new music discovery, offering listeners the chance to hear undiscovered tracks from some of the most exciting emerging artists launching their careers on SoundCloud today.”

On the business side, the hope is that advertisers will buy into this new inventory to reach what the stakeholders describe as a young and highly engaged audience.

We asked how music will be curated from Soundcloud’s vast trove of user-generated content. The answer from SCA: “Music will be curated in partnership between the music teams at SCA and SoundCloud with consideration of popular tracks with Australian SoundCloud users each week along with music we believe Australian music lovers and creators will want to hear.”

Licensing and royalty payments are accomplished via professional collection bodies APRA/AMCOS and PPCA. SoundCloud encourages indie artists to register their works with those agencies.
