Rdio dropped from attempted pre-1972 class action

rdio logo canvas 160hSeveral streaming services were recently approached with a potential class-action lawsuit focused on pre-1972 song copyright protection. Rdio was initially one of the defendants, but the company has reportedly been dropped from the legal action.

“We’re pleased the lawsuit was dismissed,” an Rdio rep said. The company has not given any further detail as to why it escaped the suit, or what its stance will be for compensation on songs recording before 1972.

The new lawsuit, an attempted class action filed by Zenbu Magazines, claims that streaming services owe royalties for songs they play that were recorded prior to 1972, when federal copyright law took effect. The suit has not been certified as a class action yet and no information about potential damages has been announced.
