Amazon has ordered two seasons of a television adaptation of the podcast Homecoming. The Gimlet Media show is an audio drama, and is the second program from that podcast network to receive television treatment (a version of Start Up was picked up by ABC this spring). The creators of the Homecoming podcast, Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, are listed as executive producers and writers for the Amazon project.
Hollywood’s recent forays into podcasting are further evidence that the audio format has entered mainstream awareness. And audio shows are proving more than just source material. Just yesterday, MTV announced early plans to continue the current narrative of its Teen Wolf program in podcast form even after the show’s final season airs. Podcasting is becoming more common as a complement in the digital strategy of big entertainment enterprises. Especially after the past year has seen a wave of interest in scripted audio dramas and radio plays across many top podcast networks (AudioHQ, Wondery, PodcastOne, and Panoply to name a few), those programs could be getting extra attention from other media.
