Spotify has added a new option for how its users can share music from across the platform with their friends. The feature is called Spotify Codes, and they are akin to QR codes. Point your phone at one of the codes, take a picture, and you’ll unlock information on your own device. That information might be specific songs, playlists, or profiles. The code technology is being made available worldwide for both iOS and Android devices.
Given how many people are listening on their phones, the idea of needing to use that device to take a photo of some other screen or flyer is an unusual one. It seems most likely that it will wind up being a niche feature in terms of user-to-user sharing, but may have more power as a marketing tool for artists looking to build outreach among their fan bases.
