Rumor (Fact)ory: Spotify to launch add-on service for superfans

The rumor (fact)ory jumped the gun on the post-holiday work week with multiple reports of Spotify readying the launch of a new service tier. Targeted to “super fans,” the new plan would boost Spotify’s monthly subscription price by $5.99 per month. The current Premium plan has consumers paying $11.99 monthly.

On the product side, three added features are reportedly planned:

  • High quality audio
  • Remixing tools
  • Concert ticket sales

Bloomberg takes the lead in this reporting, based on unquoted sources. We reported the possibility of a “Super Premium” subscription plan in November (HERE), which at that time focused speculation entirely on lossless audio.

Consumers who love high quality audio might be muttering “about time,” as they greet this feature. The Tidal music streaming service took the lead in lossless recordings in its October, 2014 U.S. launch.

The launch timeline is said to be this year, and AI will be involved somehow, according to sources.
