RAIN Notes: Tuesday, December 5

Jottings of note:

“An issue all US recording artists (and their teams) should be paying attention to” — that’s Colin Rushing, previously Chief Legal Officer at U.S. royalty collection agency SoundExchange, about how U.S. and UK copyright laws differ, and how changes to the UK legislation could deprive American recording artists of royalty payments for radio play in the UK. The fulcrum of this controversy is the difference in U.S. law (where performers are not paid at all for radio play) and UK law (where they are). Sounds simple enough, but a “reciprocity principle” makes things slippery. Read HERE, and another article HERE.

While iHeartPodcasts and the Digital Audio Group get a lot of attention here at RAIN, a significant realignment of the iHeartMedia Markets Group has been announced. (The Markets Group is part of iHeart’s Multi Platform Group in the current corporate alignment.) Five new division presidents have been named. This appears to be an entirely internal shuffle of titles and purviews. There is an emphasis on the Political and Sports platforms, and Multi-Cultural Business Development. Details HERE.
