RAIN Notes: August 2

Jottings of note:

Breaking New Ground

We learn from SiriusXM’s Q2 earnings report that the company is reaching outside its traditional subscription model, introducing free listening supported by ads. It’s a head-turning change for the iconic subscription-based service. “Our new package structure will feature clear all-in pricing, tiered plans based on interest, a unified offer strategy, and simplified transaction experiences,” according to SVP Hooper Stevens. More RAIN coverage of SiriusXM Q2 earnings next week.

AM FTW

If you haven’t heard much lately about the so-called AM Radio Bill, which seeks a government mandate to include AM radios in new cars, you’re not the only one. We learn from Inside Radio that a dozen conservative groups led by the American Principles Project is poking Congress with a stick to bring a vote to the table. The push takes the form of a letter evangelizing the broad and unique AM programming like church services, football games, and political presentations. The plea is signed by Salem Media Group and National Religious Broadcasters, among others.

Back To Roots

John Goforth announces his departure from Magellan AI, where he has served as Chief Revenue Officer for nearly five years. Exact next-steps are undisclosed, but Goforth does say “It’s time for me to get back to my roots as a publisher.” and promises details soon. And he remains connected to Magellan AI as a strategic advisor: “With the anticipated growth of the industry and growing need for more data, analytics, insights, and measurement across the board. I’m excited to support them into the future,’ he says. In the last eight years Goforth has spent time at Midroll Media, iHeartMedia, HowStuffWorks, and WaitWhat.
