Jottings of note:

All The Ears

Spotify is holding its annual All Ears podcasting summit this week (more exactly, on the 17th) in Berlin. A highlight sizzle reel is already posted HERE.  The event will be MC’d by Michael Krause, General Manager of Europe at Spotify (formerly at Deezer). “I’m very excited to bring the industry back together and continue our conversations around the future of the audio field in Germany,” he says.

New Chief

Inside Radio announces that Sean McDevitt will become Managing Editor, taking the seat vacated by Paul Heine, who resigned the position in January (RAIN coverage HERE). McDevitt’s reporting career has taken him through CNN Money, United Stations and Radio Networks (where he was also an executive producer), Bloomberg LP (writing and production), and CBS News in New York. He is currently based in Franklin, Tennessee. “Inside Radio is the industry’s most trusted news source, and I’m honored for the chance to continue the strong editorial legacy that Paul has built,” McDevitt said.

Why Just One?

An AM radio station in Belleville, Illinois — WSDZ-AM, is accomplishing hyperlocal targeting of its signal with technology which splits the signal among eight transmitting towers. A piece of technology called a Phasor keeps everything in order. The system tunes the directionality of the multi-tower array, allowing the station to keep the signal within its licensed parameters. The setup even modulates things at night to account for AM’s greater carrying power during those hours. It all adds up to optimizing reach and number of listeners. An article HERE includes a video.
