Google refocuses operating system project to smart speakers and smart displays

Google has several operating systems under its umbrella, and one of them is getting a pivot in response to the swelling interest in smart speakers. The Android Things operating system was initially designed as a simpler platform for use in Internet of Things hardware. This week, a developer post announced that Android Things will be refocused just for use in smart speakers and smart displays after the company and its partners have seen success in those segments. It has an Android Things software development kit available to developers for making apps for this specific product segment.

Most assessments of the global smart speaker market show Google securely in the second spot behind Amazon. It’s Google Home Mini has been an especially strong mover, with a low price point appealing to consumers who are curious about smart speakers.
