Columbia’s WKCR is airing online once again

wkcr logo canvasThe online stream of Columbia University’s WKCR station is back in business after a several months of silence. The organization suspended its online simulcasts in January, although it was tight-lipped about the exact reasons for the hiatus. A Columbia representative said the webcast rate decision by the Copyright Royalty Board was not responsible for the pause, but a note on the station website said that it was involved in renegotiating the contract that allowed them to stream.

“We have been in the process of making technical and logistical changes to improve your listening experience and to ensure that WKCR can have a sustainable and consistent online presence in the future,” the station board said in announcing the stream’s return. The technical changes include improved audio quality, continuous metadata display, and unlimited listener capacity. The note did not divulge any details about the contract negotiations, but fans of the station’s unique programming will likely just be thrilled at the simulcast’s return.
