UK listeners have doubled their streaming use so far in 2014

UK flag canvasThe British Phonographic Industry group reported that UK listeners have streamed 10.2 billion tracks to date this year, almost double the 5.4 billion tracks streamed last year in the same period. People are listening to tunes more than 300 million times each week on the popular streaming platforms. It also crunches out to 160 streams for every person in the country so far in 2014. “Streaming music continues to surge forward at record speed,” said Geoff Taylor, CEO of the BPI and BRIT Awards. “We have soared past the landmark of 300m audio streams a week, adding another milestone as we continue to mark a decade of digital.”

This news fits in nicely with a report of Spotify UK financials. the British division of the global music service crossed into profitability in 2013. The dramatic increase in UK streaming this year (across all services, not just Spotify), foretells a potentially good story for Spotify UK’s 2014 financial reporting.
