Sonos may be planning to launch an API for support in third-party apps. This would mean that music services not currently in partnership with the company could get into the Sonos speaker system through their own apps. GigaOm noticed a job posting at the WiFi speaker company seeking a software test engineer to guide projects aimed at “allowing third party music services to easily integrate their apps with Sonos.” Since the job posting only recently appeared, it’s unclear when Sonos might be ready to open the doors to its in-house technology.
CES this year showed strong industry interest in WiFi speakers. One of the biggest announcements was that of Google Cast, which positions the tech giant as a direct rival to Sonos. Although Sonos has already partnered with some music and audio services, including a high-profile tie-up with Deezer, opening up its platform to more streaming networks could help it to maintain leadership in the field.
