Rumor (Fact)ory: YouTube to launch “premium light”; ad-free podcasts

YouTube is reportedly planning a new subscription plan, to be wedged between the current $13.99 Premium plan (all ads removed) and zero-cost ad-supported video watching.

According to Bloomberg, which cites and quotes unnamed sources in Google/YouTube,the new mid-tier plan which would remove ads from most videos in several markets.

Notably, YouTube’s gigantic library of podcasts would be presented without ads in the new plan.

Reportedly, that “premium light” option will roll out first in the U.S.,Australia,Germany, and Thailand.

The tactic can easily be seen as a competitive thrust in Spotify’s direction; Spotify launched video podcasts over four years ago (RAIN coverage HERE).
