RAIN Notes: Monday, August 7

Jottings of note:

Definitions

“Why can’t we even agree on the definition of a listener?” That provocative question comes from Jonas Woost, Co-Founder of podcast growth agency Bumper, in an essay called “Don’t Confuse ‘Listeners’ With ‘Downloaders’.” He asserts that the podcast industry uses the word “listener” to mean different things — potentially problematic for such a key metric. Go HERE for his analysis and solutions (which, naturally enough, involve his company’s business).

Intentional Boredom

iHeartPodcasts announced that top sleep and relaxation podcast, Nothing Much Happens: Bedtime Stories to Help You Sleep, will join the iHeartPodcast Network. Launched in April 2018, the cleverly named podcast has delivered peaceful and relaxing content to listeners around the world, consistently ranking in the top one percent of podcasts worldwide according to iHeart. The show recently surpassed 100 million downloads.

Perspectives

On August 9, The Podglomerate podcast network is launching Podcast Perspectives, a weekly interview show which will discuss ways to build the next generation of podcasting. It’s hosted by Founder and CEO Jeff Umbro, who said that “the show is for podcast veterans and enthusiasts, but we’re hoping that it reaches a broader audience as well, rather than just reaching podcast professionals.” The format will feature interviews and panel discussions with producers, editors, publishers, and platforms.
