$500,000 No More
Bloomberg is running an interesting piece by podcast columnist Ashley Carman. It documents the severely reduced production budgets in podcasting, and the difficulty of selling a new limited-run series. The piece discusses a “new normal,” and Carman observes: “A deal for an eight or 10 episode series during these [past] glory days could come with a budget of $500,000.” The pricing range now for budgeting a new series? $150k – $250k. And securing any kind of deal takes much longer than in the previous era. Reduced episodes, smaller teams, layoffs, and lost money are all characteristics of the present era. There’s much more, including Ashley Carman’s general predictions of how the industry will be shaped. Read it HERE.
