In an intriguing reversal of Podtrac’s familiar podcast ranker — in which the measurement company examines one area of interest with multiple participants — Podtrac has introduced Top Podcasts By Country, which lists the single #1 podcast in each of 30 countries.
A more complete national list — say, 100 top podcasts per country — would itemize 3,000 podcasts, obviously not feasible as a public release. (That complete monthly database is provided as a subscription product for clients.) However, this release is an interesting greatest hits version, as it were, listing the #1 podcast in each of 30 countries. (Small portion illustrated below.)
CORRECTION: Podtrac does publicly disclose the top 100 podcasts of each country. Anyone can see those long lists by going to the TOP PODCASTS BY COUNTRY page, and clocking any nation in the Country column. (Thanks to Podtrac for informing us of this solution.)
“Each podcast ranking method has its advantages and limitations,” Podtrac observes.
For this project, which necessarily uses multiple counting and estimation techniques to derive results, Podtrac is meticulous in describing its methodology. Four ranking methods are described:
- Rankings based on downloads and estimated downloads
- Ranking based on download measured shows only
- Ranking based on survey data
- Rankings from podcast platforms
