Music tops successfully funded Kickstarter campaigns in 2014

kickstarter categories 2014Kickstarter shared a slightly belated year-in-review, compiling data about the projects that were successfully crowd-funded on the platform in 2014. Campaigns received $529 million in pledges over the course of the year, or more than $1,000 a minute.

Music was the top category, barely edging out Film & Video with just over 4,000 projects funded. Pono Music landed among the projects with the most backers, as did public radio campaign Radiotopia. In aggregate, all of the platform’s music projects secured $34.1 million in pledges.

The totals show that crowd-funding seems to be continuing its momentum as a force for independent and niche developments in the music industry. Patreon, a crowdsourcing platform based on ongoing patronage rather than project-based pledges, also posted solid numbers for 2014.
