Google’s AI calls him “incredibly influential.” Certainly his show, WTF with Marc Maron, helped galvanize the podcast category in early days. Today we learn that the groundbreaking podcast will distribute its final episode sometime this fall.
Maron made the announcement early in episode 1648, posted this morning, in Maron’s characteristic no-BS manner:
“It’s time, folks. WTF is coming to an end.” — Marc Maron, creator and host, WTF with Marc Maron
In his announcement remarks, Maron clearly sounds pleased with his early-mover accomplishment, which helped to sart a new type of entertainment.
“This is a show that was started when there were no podcasts. Now there are nothing but podcasts.”
Perhaps the show’s most legendary episode was the appearance of President Obama in June, 2019 (RAIN HERE).
In 2021, Maron received the inaugural Governor’s Award from The Podcast Academy (RAIN HERE).
In May 2022, the show joined Acast’s platform (RAIN HERE).
Interesting to note — for all its pioneer cred and legendary aura, WTF does not appear on recent Spotify, Edison Research, or Podtrac top podcast charts.
In Reddit discussions of the news immediately after it broke, we see mixed reviews of the show generally, but shared respect for his influence and long run. Episode recommendation lists are starting to appear. (HERE.)
