Edison Research releases Top 50 Podcasts; “Exciting newcomers”

Edison Research has released its latest Top 50 Podcasts in the US, representing survey results for Q1 listening. The survey method is important in the ranker business; unlike many others, Edison’s survey method opens the door to any podcast in the world. That differs from server-side measurement of podcast downloads, which limits the outcome to podcasts hosted by the company doing the survey.

The clear winner in this method among podcasts is The Joe Rogan Experience, universally regarded as the most popular English-language podcast. The show takes the #1 spot in Edison’s reckoning, as it has in all previous Edison surveys.

Edison makes not of “exciting newcomers” in the ranker:

“Debuting at #11, Club Shay Shay gains traction with a viral episode featuring Monique and Katt Williams, even earning a parody on Saturday Night Live. Nightcap, co-hosted by Club Shay Shay’s Shannon Sharpe, debuts at #46. The Tucker Carlson Podcast, which launched in early December 2023 at the same time as Carlson’s own streaming network, enters the top 50 at #24.”

Other shows slipped from the top 50 to lower visibility. Out of The Top 50 The Bill Simmons Podcast, H3 Podcast, Dark History and the WTF with Marc Maron Podcast bid farewell to the elite this quarter.

Edison surveyed 5,300 weekly podcast consumers ages 13 and older in the U.S. Participants indicated which podcasts they listened to in the past week along with a variety of demographic, psychographic, and purchase-behavior information. This ranker measures reach as a percentage of the weekly podcast listening audience.
