Apple shared a compelling data point in its best of 2016 review. The company said that Apple listeners consumed more than 10 billion downloads and streams of podcasts worldwide over the course of the year. According to Podtrac, Apple’s Podcasts app is responsible for about 65% of listening. Even as a rough estimate, then, Apple’s latest figure sets some context for exactly how large an footprint podcasting had this year.
NPR’s Fresh Air was the most-downloaded show of the past 12 months on Apple’s podcast platforms. Apple’s best-of-the-year accolades included two different NPR programs: How I Built This and NPR Politics. FiveThirtyEight Politics, 2 Dope Queens, and Revisionist History were also among those highlighted.
Impressive numbers and that I think show a big opportunity for podcasters.
I’d love to see how these 10,000,000,000 downloads are split. Have a feeling it’s a 90/10 thing…. Great if you can get it! 🙂
