Amazon’s head of digital music and video departing the company

Bill Carr canvasAmazon’s head of digital music and video is departing the company. Bill Carr has spent 15 years with the online retailer, and was at the helm when the company entered the markets for both online music and streaming video. He was responsible for launching Amazon’s streaming music service for customers with Prime memberships.

While it is currently a small entry in the streaming market, Prime Music still has the backing of one of the world’s top businesses. Prime Music is not recognized as competition for the major standalone services, but it has the large built-in audience of Prime subscribers. Plus it received an expanded song catalog and adopted playlist features earlier this summer. Amazon recently brought in a new board member with serious music credentials, but there’s no word yet about who might fill Carr’s shoes in growing and promoting the streaming services or about where he will take his skills next.
