The UK is adopting new rules for its collection societies aimed at streamlining the artistic rights process across Europe. The regulations, which take effect on April 10, build on an EU directive from 2014 that sought to make digital rights management simpler across borders.
That directive focused on delivering accurate and timely payments to rights holders and monitoring for collecting societies. It also said artists, song writers and rights holders can allow collecting societies to manage their rights for the territory of their choice, no matter where in the EU either party is based.
The UK’s Intellectual Property Office released a guidance on implementing the collective rights management directive. The plans were drafted following a two-year consultation process.
“We are satisfied that the regulations will ensure that best practice is at the heart of the CRM’s across Europe, ensuring that rights holders are paid accurately and on time,” said Alison Wenham, CEO of the Association of Independent Music.
