Jottings of note:

A View of Views

Podcast audience development specialist and Co-founder of podcast growth agency Bumper, Dan Misener, has posted an analytical thought piece about the challenges and tactics of finding a true count of podcast audiences. The challenge lies in the fragmented consumption landscape, ranging from YouTube to Spotify to Apple Podcasts and other delivery trails. Misener’s sympathy lies with workers tasked with delivering podcast metrics: “My boss doesn’t care about the differences between views, starts, streams, and plays. I just need one big number.” Along with that core complication, Misener observes that the download metric is declining in relevance. It’s not a surprise that Bumper is Misener’s solution; the interest here is the lengthy, detailed, graph-supported analysis of the major podcast platforms. Example: Apple Podcasts will count multiple “plays” if a user pauses the podcast several times while listening. All of this is documented with explanations and several interesting graphs.
