Edison Research brings us insight from its continuous Share of Ear listener survey work. Today we learn that on-demand audio has surpassed linear listening. That is to say, chosen audio programs like podcasts have surpassed passive listening sources like AM/FM and Satellite radio.
Edison’s newly released graphic (below) displays an 11-year span in which the two trends — one growing and the other receding — proceed with steady insistence.

The crossover point, when stream listening took control, occurred in 2024. These data represent Q2 measurements.
“The consistency of this pattern is noteworthy,” Edison observes. “The margin of twelve points that occurred in 2020, three years before the crossing point, is the same margin we see today, albeit in the opposite direction. Share of Ear subscribers have access to these trends as they emerge and the ability to look among different demographic groups.”
