Loup Ventures: Amazon still tops U.S. smart speakers, but Google projected to take the lead

Loup Ventures has published its latest update to its forecast of smart speaker sales. The revised predictions anticipate that 2019 will see 72 million unit sales, up from 52 million sales in 2018. The company is adding Chinese manufacturers to its global model, reflecting the growing presence those brands are having on international sales. China is projected to account for 25 million global units sold this year, and could see 200% year-on-year growth in Loup Ventures’ accounting.

Loup expects that the U.S. market for smart speakers will grow 38% year-on-year in 2019, slowing slightly from 41% year-on-year growth posted in 2018. Amazon is likely to retain more than half of the U.S. market share this year at 58%, followed by Google Home with 28% and Apple HomePod with just 4%. Other brands have a 10% share.

Despite current lead for Amazon, Loup estimates that Google will surpass Amazon’s sales. By 2025, Google Home is projected to have 140 million units sold and a 48.1% unit market share, while Amazon Echo is pegged to reach 130 million units sold with unit market share of 44.7%.
