Venerable streaming service and RAIN News sponsor AccuRadio is starting the process of bankruptcy protection in Chicago. The action comes after several months of negotiation with government mandated music royalty collection agency SoundExchange. That negotiation is at an impasse, according to an AccuRadio press release. (See below.)

The announcement positions AccuRadio alongside three other audio/streaming companies — iHeartMedia, Audacy, and Cumulus — that have successfully used Chapter 11 protection in the past.
The current legal trouble began in mid-2024 when SoundExchange filed a lawsuit against AccuRadio (RAIN HERE). At that time, Hanson asserted that he and his company had been in negotiation with SoundExchange, hoping to reach what Hanson called “a fair and reasonable payment plan […] in what we believed was good faith from both parties.”
Broken Expectation
Hanson was surprised by the 2024 lawsuit, and is all the more surprised now, after a failed settlement proposal.

Hanson said his group is “extremely disappointed,” emphasizing that “AccuRadio has been a consistently reliable SoundExchange licensee for the vast majority of the past two decades, having paid SX over $13,500,000 in royalties.”
According to the AccuRadio chief, AccuRadio resumed full payments to SoundExchange months ago, “and continues to keep current with ongoing obligations.”
The AccuRadio Value Proposition
Today’s press release from AccuRadio is part announcement, part history, and part advocacy of mid-tier musicians and AccuRadio’s service on their behalf. Paul Maloney, AccuRadio’s EVP/Music Programming, voiced a protest of the music royalty architecture.

With all this, Hanson expresses confidence. “Filing for bankruptcy wasn’t an easy decision,” he noted. Hanson asserts that AccuRadio revenues have been consistently improving, and the company is now profitable. He predicts AccuRadio will emerge from this challenge “healthier and more resilient, and will continue to be an outlet for human-curated music that our listeners desire and cherish.”

CHICAGO, IL — May 14, 2025 — AccuRadio, the oldest surviving brand of personalizable online radio and the leading fully-human-curated music streaming service, sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Chicago today after reaching an impasse in the face of litigation from SoundExchange and a royalty scheme that renders music streaming extremely challenging for all but the largest corporations.
