SiriusXM, primarily known for in-car listening devices and proprietary programming, has launched a breakthrough proposition that could change consumer presumption of the brand. It’s an ad-supported plan priced at “less than seven dollars” according to sources.
Advertisements are not completely new to the SiriusXM experience; some of its talk programming contains commercials.
The new plan is called SiriusXM Play, and will be priced at “less than” seven dollars monthly (we read that as $6.99). Launch date is unknown to us presently.
“SiriusXM Play presents us with an incredible opportunity to thoughtfully scale our audio service on the road and off to even more listeners across North America,” said Wayne Thorsen, SiriusXM’s Chief Operating Officer. “With Play, we can reach and engage with new, more price-sensitive listeners with a low-cost, ad-supported subscription.” (This quote sourced from The Auto Channel.)
While this configuration could bring in new users, it’s also new and potentially fertile ground for advertisers. We might expect to see Sirius introduce sophisticated listener targeting and dynamic ad insertion — stalwart features of native online audio.
