Streaming a small but growing share of Canadian music spending

Nielsen Music 360 Canada 2016Spending on streaming services in Canada has increased since last year, according to the latest Nielsen Music 360 report for that country. The spend allocation revealed that paid streaming’s share across all Canadians rose from 2% in 2015 to 4% this year. Teens and Millennials have also doubled their allocation toward streaming, both increasing from 3% to 7%.

Live music experiences and concerts still hold by far the biggest chunk of spending. The shares for physical formats and digital downloads either stayed level or declined. For the overall population physical format spending dropped from a 20% share to 16%, while holding steady at 13% for teens and dropping from 17% to 14% for Millennials. Digital download share was static at 11% for the general population. Teens’ share dropped from 21% to 18% and Millennials’ declined from 14% to 11%.
