Sony expands NYU audio facility

In March 2025 we noted the creation of the Audio Institute at NYU, funded by Sony to the tune of $7.4 million. At that time there was not a physical space for the Institute; it was an interdisciplinary program studying advances in audio technology (equipped with Sony gear). Internships and scholarships were created around the Institute. The news today announces a new space — the Sony Audio Institute Studio — a modernization and expansion of the original facility. At a dedication ceremony, Steinhardt Professor of Music Business Larry Miller told the Washington Square News, “What we have done is raise the bar by building in new technology that will enable students to be even more powerful creators of immersive audio technology products.”

Beyond gleaming new tech, there is a cutting-edge aspect to the planned research, which includes exploration of machine listening, immersive audio, and music psychology and neuroscience.
