Mobile device vs AM/FM receiver: Listening choice depends on urban/rural breakout (Edison Research)

The question is broad: How do Americans 13+ listen to audio? Edison Research frames that question as a comparison of two options:

  • Mobile device
  • AM/FM receiver

In addition, there is a geographic breakout which measures Edison’s survey results in three settings:

  • Urban
  • Suburban
  • Rural

One might speculate that mobile devices are used more in urban settings (where signals are strong) than rural settings (where signals might be spotty). That speculation matches the results, as graphed below.

The question asks how all Americans do their listening. Edison answers that question with some historical context:

Among all Americans 13+, 38% of time is spent listening to audio on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet, and 30% of time is spent listening to audio on an AM/FM radio receiver. Share of Ear showed that the mobile device surpassed the AM/FM radio receiver back in Q3 of 2022. — Edison Research.
