Hearing what’s next: Netflix reportedly contemplates video podcasts

If rumors are to be believed, Netflix is contemplating adding video podcasts to its programming slate. As we learn from Business Insider his information comes from research company Bernstein, and is saturating Netflix news today.

Bernstein’s reporting included this statement:

“Penetration is nearing saturation in some markets, and consumption per person has remained steady at roughly 60 minutes per day in recent years. To sustain growth, Netflix needs to expand its TAM and drive higher engagement.” –Bernstein

These sources speculate that Netflix would not need to dominate in video podcasts, but does need more content to keep users engaged.

Business Insider also reported that Netflix has spoken with a leas one star podcaster — Alex Cooper / Call Her Daddy) — but lost the bidding war to SiriusXM.

Aligned with this news, we learn that Josh Lindgren, head of podcasts at Creative Artists Agency, thinks of podcasts as modern-day talk shows, and that YouTube is no longer a mere offshoot of television; “it is TV today,” he asserts.
