“Despacito” takes the crown as most-streamed track of all time

Most musicians dream of having a No. 1 hit, and today marks the arrival of one. “Despacito,” a track by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, is now the most-streamed song of all time. With 4.6 billion streams since its release in January, “Despacito” has surpassed the previous champ, “Sorry” by Justin Bieber.

YouTube was a critical factor in the track’s success. The original video (above) has 2.6 billion views as of this writing. Its global appeal also helped deliver the chart success. It’s also the first song with mostly Spanish lyrics to sit at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since “Macarena” in 1996. The song’s popularity also got a second wind when a version with a verse sung by Justin Bieber entered circulation.
