Deezer tracks AI music submissions … and it’s a lot of them. “A colossal challenge.”

Paris-based streaming music platform Deezer has alerted the industry that a “massive increase” of AI-generated tracks is being submitted to the service for distribution. The numbers:

  • 30,000 fully AI tracks every day
  • 28% of total daily delivery

These startling statistics come via a recently created AI detection tool which has been operating since the start of the year. Deezer claims to be the first and to-date only music streaming platform to accomplish this AI-tagging.

The company notes a trend accelerating at a startling pace, the company attitude toward it:

“Following a massive increase during the year, AI music now makes up a significant part of the daily track delivery to music streaming and we want to lead the way in minimizing any negative impact for artists and fans alike.” — Alexis Lenternier, CEO, Deezer.

The company response is to fully remove AI-generated material from algorithmic recommendations, and to avoid including it in editorial playlists. The strategy there is to minimize impact on the royalty pool.

“And most importantly, we continue to fight fraudulent activity, which is the main driver behind uploading fully AI generated content.” — Deezer

In a footnote to the press release, Deezer brags that its AI music detection tech “sets an industry standard,” and can detect 1005 of false content that comes from the most used and prolific generators. Beyond that specific accomplishment, Deezer has made “significant progress” in generalized detection without a specific dataset to learn from.

All this is important to creators, and Deezer estimates that nearly 25% of creator income could be at risk by 2028 — that’s four billion dollars. The company calls the situation “a colossal, even critical challenge for the music creation sector as a whole.
