As the identification of AI-made audio content continues to be a mandate in some settings, we learn that Apple Music is starting to require “Made With AI” labels on AI-created music uploads. The “AI-created” designation can be slippery when AI is used in a portion of the creative process, and Apple’s definition — “material portion” — doesn’t help much in our opinion. The tags must be applied to four components of a music release:
- The audio track
- The written composition and lyrics
- The album artwork
- The music video
The background of this mandate is a general industry acknowledgment that about one-third of new music releases contain AI elements. One study by music industry networking tool SubmitHub asserts that one third of creative artists are using AI somewhere in their creative workflow.
Interestingly, Apple owns a sophisticated AI detection system, which might seem to obviate the need for a creator honor system. We also learn (HERE) that Apple Music is reportedly planning to launch a system of labeling AI-created songs.
