Warner Music and Paramount Pictures have agreed to a partnership arrangement for making theatrical movies about legendary musicians, past and present. The projects will be undertaken in collaboration with those musicians or their estates. No specific artists or project titles have been named, as this venture seems to be in a conceptual phase.
Observing the timing of this announcement, it’s easy to think of the recently released Michael biopic, currently in theaters and breaking ticket-sale records — $440 million worldwide in under three weeks, with expectations to surpass $500 million globally when distribution widens.
Warner CEO Robert Kyncl characterizes the partnership as forward-looking and innovative, and says “We’re taking a fresh approach to the space. Every artist deserves to tell the stories behind their life and music in their own creative way.”
