New podcast network Hyphen Media launches with diversity mission

Hyphen Media is a new audio-first network that tells stories by and about people of color. Founders Andrew Kuo and Kareem Rahma aim to make Hyphen a platform to help unrepresented voices grow exponentially in entertainment from podcasts to TV to film.

A slate of shows is in the works; the company has partnered with writers from popular and anticipated shows on television to create both scripted and unscripted podcasts, including Pakistani-American writer Abdullah Saeed (HBO’s “High Maintenance”), Mauritanian-American Muslim writer and comedian Mamoudou N’Diaye (Netflix’s “Space Force”) and Korean-American writer Sarah Cho (Hulu’s “The Girl from Plainville”).

The idea is to make podcasts ready for adaptation into other forms, especially television and feature films. To that end, Hyphen Media has partnerships in place with First Look Media’s new streaming service Topic, QCODE Media, SALT, and the premium non-fiction film and television studio, XTR. Hyphen Media is backed by influential investors and business figures, including Hyphen Capital, which supports the next generation of the nation’s leading Asian American founders.
