Neil Young’s fledgling company promises an ecosystem (download store plus specialized mobile player) for high-fidelity music. The premise is that portable music files (MP3 and other formats) is highly compressed for quick downloading, cutting out many of the sonic qualities that make modern recordings great.

Audiophile listening is usually a niche, not mainstream — but the Kickstarter success gives us pause.
