Most Canadian musicians suffer financial stress with impaired mental health (Revelios)

Organizational mental health consultancy Revelios, based in Oakville Canada, has released a study of mental health in the Canadian music industry. This release covers preliminary results of ongoing fieldwork, conducted in December, representing 804 surveyed individuals.

These preliminary results display a nearly unanimous sentiment among Canadian musicians that mental health issues are widespread:

Within his disturbing context lies a more dire finding: Thoughts of suicide are common, with 42% of respondents answering ‘Yes’ to the question, “Have you ever thought about taking your own life?”

Fifty percent of respondents have been diagnosed with a mental health condition.

Surrounding research is included, reporting the suicide information with similarly troubled survey results in the UK.

Financial stress is rampant in Canadian music, with 79% of respondents claiming that condition. Only six percent felt any sense of “job security.” To put a number into that, the survey reports that 53% reported an annual income below $50,000.

We are providing a fairly superficial gloss of a report which dives into geography, work environments, financial stress metrics, and survey questions about political leadership. As always we recommend the original. It is freely available HERE.
