MIDiA Research has released its second State of the Streaming Nation report. The data and analysis firm usually has valuable insights into audio and music trends, and this dive into the current streaming ecosystem is no different. It offers a deep dive into both consumer behaviors and market trends for this industry, covering listeners in Brazil, Germany, Japan, Sweden, the UK, and the U.S.
The report found that streaming revenue in 2016 was $7.6 billion (retail values). It projected that figure to reach $20.1 billion by 2025. Paid subscribers are also expected to increase from 106 million in 2016 to 336 million in 2025.
It also examines some of the common assumptions about top digital music players. The end result is a large number of key findings about streaming. Here are a few of the most compelling data points:
- 18% of subscribers had taken advantage of a $1 for three months deal in the previous 12 months.
- 55% of subscribers create playlists while 27% listen to curated playlists
- 34% of consumers said they are now listening to radio less due to streaming
- The top 10 music markets accounted for 78% of 2016’s streaming revenue
- Streaming will exceed 50% of music revenues in 2019 and reach $20.9 billion in 2025
