Spotify adds controls to Taste Profile

Streaming music giant Spotify naturally profiles the tastes of its users, using its understanding of a user’s taste to create personalized playlists. That has been the case for 20 years with increased sophistication and accuracy.

Now Spotify is asking for help. More accurately, Spotify has developed a path for users to collaborate in the profiling of their own selves. The new initiative is called Spotify Taste Profile, and users can now participate in refining their own music preference profile. (Not all users — this new feature is for Premium subscribers exclusively, and only on a mobile app.)

A taste profile hub appears for those subscribers, who can guide the algorithm using normal language. It starts with users seeing their “taste profile” — an AI-generated summary of recent listening habits and genres. Users can adjust things with simple, natural language instructions: “Give me more/less of…”

Specific tracks and playlists can be excluded. Time of day can factor into this as well, which could be convenient for scheduling news podcasts.

In addition to changing and fine-tuning the listening experience, excluded tracks, artists, and playlists will not appear in the annual end-of-year Spotify Wrapped presentation.
