In wake of Spotify “Verified,” artist stream counts plummet … sometimes

Spotify launched Verified, an authenticity badge which identifies human-created music and distinguishes it from AI generated (and AI influenced) music. Started this month, the intelligence feature works by evaluating different characteristics:

In the wake of these implementations, a large community of music creators are complaining of sharp traffic drop-offs in their Spotify streams. The phenomenon is widespread enough to be titled “the stream collapse.” There is a nuance to the growing complaint: It is only Spotify algorithmic streams which are suddenly performing poorly. The complaint includes absence of communication from Spotify.

The chart below, illustrating the drop-off phenomenon, is from a user named Redkinoko, and appears on the Zinstrel substack HERE.

Since no definitive explanation was at hand, we asked ChatGPT what happened. Accommodating as always, the smart bot  offered this :

“The plummeting algorithmic streams in the AI music community appear to be the result of a significant, unannounced shift in how Spotify’s recommendation engine handles AI-generated content. While Spotify has not officially confirmed a “shadow-ban” on AI music, several new policies and algorithmic adjustments in 2026 have created a “popularity gate” that specifically impacts AI artists.”

Credit for that information goes to “Top Music Attorney” handle, an alias for “Miss Krystle” who is recognized as a music attorney.

Another documented account describes strong AI streaming performance remaining high on three other major streaming apps — Apple Music, Amazon, and Deezer. “It’s just Spotify now treating my stuff like no one wants it,” that AI-using artist observed.
