Audio/video journalism pulls in youth & diversity

Weekly British news publication The Economist is seeking to expand the youth demographic of its audience, by making its audio and video journalism less expensive to access. The company has carved out its paywalled podcasts. daily audio briefings, its portfolio of videos shows, games, and subscription newsletters, creating a new stand-alone product targeted to audiences that prefer listening and watching over reading.The new offering started yesterday (July 6) in a small cluster of national markets (Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Canada) with expansion planned for later this year. This new plan will sit alongside the company’s current podcast subscription plan, Economist Podcast +.More context and quotes are HERE. A long list indeed

The 2026 British Podcast Awards program has released its “longlist” of selected podcasts. preceding an awards ceremony on October 1. The list is published HERE, comprising 20 categories (including Welsh Language). There is a Listener’s Choice opportunity which will be opened on July 9. A winnowed-down shortlist will be announced on July 23. The British Podcast Awards were founded in 2017 by Matt Hill and Matt Deegan. The program was acquired by Haymarket Groups in 2022.
