Triton Digital turns Sounder multilingual using AI

Audio data and solutions company Sounder, a subsidiary of Triton Digital, “has gone multilingual,” as announced by Triton EVP Sharon Taylor. The announcement rolls up to Triton parent iHeartMedia.

Triton launched Sounder’s proprietary Audio Data Cloud (ADC) in 2022, to support English-language podcast creators with tools for transcription, analysis, and monetization. The company calls these tools “best in class.”

Triton Digital faced a daunting challenge in its plan to internationalize Sounder, as described in an information sheet“Should we engineer the solution by ourselves or invest in off-the-shelf-models?”

The company built and owns an English-language ASR system, which Triton is quick to call “high performing.” But replicating that work across dozens of new languages wasn’t feasible.

Seeking to “leapfrog some of that foundational work.” Triton turned to Whisper ai, and Triton’s description of its capability is a hefty promo for Whisper. That was only part of the technical challenge, though, and Triton takes the willing reader on a bloggy deep dive into technical specs and corporate decision-making. [HERE]

“Brand suitability and contextual advertising should be available to all,” Taylor notes, “so I’m excited for this next chapter of the platform where we’ll be taking it to the non-English markets Triton operates in.” (We don’t have an exact count of Triton’s international reach, but it is publicized as “over 80 countries.”)
