“While anyone with a microphone, a computer and an opinion can create a podcast, the planning and strategy involved consistently proves to be a far greater predictor of ongoing success,” said Rob Upchurch, the lead Texas A&M researcher on this Download on Podcasting study.
The best practices document presents pointers from established experts on how to go about that planning. For instance, PodcastOne Director of Programming Rich Boerner recommeded that shows should have generated at least 30,000 downloads per episode prior to approaching national advertisers or distribution networks.
“Podcasters are far better to emulate then innovate,” Upchurch continued. “While you can catch lighting in a bottle, you need to have a plan.”
